Forestry Approach

Bringing the scale and knowledge of 160 years of forestry expertise to the essential oil industry, Port Blakely has cultivated a dedicated section of trees into regenerating hedge-rows to provide the raw material required for oil production. The fresh foliage from our Douglas-fir trees is harvested on a 5-year rotation, so the trees remain standing.

TREE TO OIL IN FOUR HOURS  
We have designed our process to maximize our oil’s fresh, forest aroma and avoid the malnote associated with scavenged input material. Fresh green tops are selected, trimmed, chipped and distilled onsite and within 4 hours. The result – a bright, diffusive essential oil, unique in its category.

RENEWABLE ENERGY 
Rather than using fossil fuels, woodchip used in previous oil production is fed back into a biomass boiler to produce energy for the ensuing distillation runs. Currently the volume of biomass exceeds the distillery’s energy requirements which allows us to provide other local businesses with renewable energy.

QUALITY BY DESIGN

Our distillery features advanced automated steam flow and temperature controls to ensure consistent production quality while maintaining cool distillate temperatures. This refined design captures all the delicate volatiles often lost through distillation, preserving the full, distinctive aroma and therapeutic properties of New Zealand Douglas-fir.
